Because they're sort of bubble-shaped?
Always been Rice Bubbles here. "Rice Krispies" just sounds odd.

I really do find it fascinating looking at the way the UK, America, and Australia all have these bits of language that are sometimes completely different in all three countries, and are sometimes shared by two and different in one. (And the "two" sharing the word are never the same two. Australia and America share some words, Australia and the UK share others, and then there's things like Rice Krispies, where it seems to be a Northern Hemisphere thing...)
