Random Question For Americans

Okay. I've got to ask.

American flist people: when you hire a video from Blockbuster or similar, do you pay the store when you leave with the video, or when you bring it back?

*starting to suspect the world has differences I never knew about*

When you leave the store with the video.

If you brought the last one back late, you have to pay the late fee before you can rent a new one.

Hmm... that's what I thought. But I keep seeing Americans talking about paying for their videos when they return them.

How very odd...

maybe they're talking about paying for overdue fees?

That's what I thought the first few times, but then it started sounding less and less likely, from the way they described it.

Maybe I'm just going insane?

I think if people only paid when bringing back the vid...the stores would never see their vids/ DVDs again...
Honestly, would you return them if you didn't have to?

That's easily fixed by "if you don't return it by this date, you can't rent again".

People only pay late fees upon return, and yet people still return videos that are late.

People aren't as dishonest as you think :-p

Weeeell...I've known people who've happily rented a heap, then never returned them. Easier to do when you move suburb or town and then you can start it all over again...
Takes all sorts.
But yes, I'd hope most people would be more honest.

Oh come one....left yourself wide open.

There's this new thing called RedBox where you can rent DVD's from a machine and you just swipe your card. When you return the DVD, the machine charges your account for however many days you've had it out.
