Did you go to Morris and Sons on Collins St? Personally, I'd recommend shopping somewhere else unless you are looking for something specific. Much of the yarn I have found elsewhere for less. They do have some of the better brands of knitting needles.
For knitting Lincraft has the best range of cheap knitting needles amd crochet hooks. Spotlight has the best range of cheap pure wool yarn if you want to buy a ball or two.

Craftee cottage has a good range of embroidery flossess and metalic thread. Most of their yarn is either cheaper than elsewhere or something a bit special.
