Such a wonderful post! Whenever I hear someone sneering about fannish people and how they "have too much time on their hands," I think of things like this, and know being a rabid fangirl actually makes life incredibly rich.
One of my very best friends, who lives 2 1/2 hours from me, is someone I met when we lived a couple of thousand miles apart -- I met her when she commented on my fics. I have a fangirl coming to visit for a couple of days in March (we bonded over h/c at Writercon) and another in April (we met over Buffy and now both fangirl SPN). As a fannish friend pointed out, when you move halfway across the country (as I did), you have a whole set of friends who don't change, amid all the other seismic changes that take place. LJ is still here, and those friends are still here.
