I should point out that August in London is often unbearable. The temperatures of 30°-plus wouldn't phase an Aussie, I expect, but there's also the humidity, the air pollution and the almost total lack of air conditioning. January is much more pleasant. :-)

(But yes, winter would be lovely. And allow me to escape 40 degree days down here.)
