Professional Engineer, at your service
I wore a hard hat today.
This is the first time I've had to be hard-hatted, so it was pretty exciting. But rather random, in contrast to the rest of me. You see, protective site-wear sort of goes in stages:
Stage 1: orange vest. Should be worn on pretty much any site, even if you're just taking pictures of a stationary object while standing on the footpath.
Stage 2: steelcapped boots. Should be worn when walking around on non-footpathy areas.
Stage 3: hard hat. Should be worn in situations when people might drop big steel beams on your head.
And so on...
As a general rule, if you're wearing 'stage 3' gear, you're also wearing the stuff from all the previous stages.
In this case, though, I was going along to site with someone else, and when I asked him if I should change my outfit, he said no, it was fine, we'd be walking on the footpath.
He kind of neglected to mention that we'd be walking on a footpath PAST all the construction workers driving concrete mixers along the footpath and swinging large pieces of tram rail around our heads...
And this site visit was my last activity for the day, so I'd brought all my normal going-home-on-the-train stuff with me.
Please take a moment to picture me, in borrowed orange vest, really nice shoes, dressy top, and borrowed hard hat, carrying my handbag around a construction site.
I'm just glad I didn't wear heels this morning.
And kicking myself that I didn't have a camera with me...
