Random Buffy Observation

It suddenly occurred to me that, at the start of Chosen, Caleb, Angel, and Spike all independently decide to sneak into the crypt and spy on Buffy as she meets the Guardian.

And they all manage to do so without letting any of the others see them.

*sigh* Yes, and then the Guardian buys the farm and Buffy just flounces out, all lalalalalalala. Maybe if they'd made it misty and maze-like in there, I could have bought that it was a alternate nether-dimension or some such drivel, but they didn't even try!

Moreover, Angel somehow manages not to smell Spike's presence. Or...?

Good point to [livejournal.com profile] moscow_watcher with the smelling thing. Huh.

But then again, Spike claims not to have smelled Angel's presence either (he used his vampiric eyeballs instead). Maybe the tomb smelled so strongly of age and dust and decay it blotted out everything else?

And maybe The First was standing outside handing out tickets. "Caleb, 11.30 to 11.35. Angel, 11.35 to 11.40. Spike, 11.40 to 11.45". :-)

Oh, you know vampires can only smell stuff when it's convenient for the plot!

Symbolically it's interesting. The male gaze is furtively seeking to spy on the secret mysteries of womanhood.

The only one that really makes me raise my eyebrow is how Caleb was able to sneak inside without Buffy being aware of him. Angel showed up while Buffy and Caleb were occupied in a fight, so that makes it easy to see how he could stroll in unnoticed. Spike seemed to be actively hiding from them and perhaps Angel confused the scent of Spike he picked up *on* Buffy to include what he left from physically being there only minutes earlier.
