Bad LOLcat! No biscuit!

Just saw a LOLcat that said (and I quote):

Shakespeare Kitteh dost not approve of thou foul grammar

My eyes! My eyes! *weeps for humanity*

Okay people. Here's the thing:

I ---> Thou
Me ---> Thee
My ---> Thy
Mine ---> Thine

See how that works? (It even rhymes and everything.)

That bugged me too!

(Though maybe it's because LOLcats are ungrammatical in any age.)

True - but it's criticising someone else's grammar, and I just...

*cries*

Yep, it was a real stretch to be generous on that, but I could use the exercise.

It's like seeing internet flames where people mock another's speling.

It's an ironic comment on people who complain about grammar and end up making mistakes themselves. ;-)

(Not you, obviously. Your grammars are impeccable.)

Also, for the record:

I do
Thou dost
He, she, it doth
We do
You do
They do

And, for completeness:

I have
Thou hast
He, she, it hath
We have
You have
They have.

I was going to suggest they were being ironic. But beer_good_foamy beat me to it.

[identity profile] swellen.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Actually 'thou' isn't 'I' - it's the second person singular pronoun (ie, you). Which is still wrong on the LOLcat, of course.

Oh, I know. But the other options are "you, you, your, yours", "he, him, his, his", and "she, her, her, hers". Which all have repetition in them.
Comparing "thou" to "I" is the easiest way to explain which ones are used, if you don't want to start discussing "subject", "object", and so forth.

[identity profile] swellen.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Phew - didn't think it was like you to get that wrong! I was strangely disturbed...

[identity profile] immer-am-lesen.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
But if you add in an invisible comma, it's better...

"Shakespeare Kitteh dost not approve of thou, foul grammar"

Kinda. Still wrong, but a little better.
