Okay. Now I'm curious.

(This is all beer_good_foamy's fault.)

[Poll #1526051]

Is it a regional thing? A generational thing? Why all the confusion?

Hey, what's with the default being on incy wincy??? Trying to trick us, huh?

I think the confusion is that YOU'RE WRONG and it's itsy bitsy and your silly delusions must be stopped at once. :D

Hey, just wait - all the British people are currently asleep, and my poll has been taken up by Americans...

Liiiies.

Also, it doesn't matter how many people vote for the other options - I am secure in my rightness. :D

Except for the British people who work night shifts.

When it comes to knowing about spiders, I'm going to trust the Aussie before I take the word of any Americans...

.........but incy wincy is just WRONG.

Also, it's clearly some sort of small spider - we've got just as much of those as Australia. If it were the huge big spider, sure, but we're on even ground here. :P

It's itsy bitsy!!!!

As in Itsy Bitsy, Teeney Weeney Yellow Pokerdot Bikini? Totally a 50's song. The rhyme predates that by centuries! :-)

[identity profile] menomegirl.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini was released in 1960 and has nothing at all to do with Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Also, did you know that Itsy Bitsy Spider was released as a song once?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/woman_of_/ 2010-02-16 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
There are a few versions of Incy Wincy Spider on the internet, here is one http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-songs-incy-wincy.htm

It is said in a sing-song voice, so often used as as song.

The only time I heard the expression Itsy Bitsy was in that song, not used in the UK.

Hmmph, like a website proves you're right??? Noooo.

Australia isn't known for particularly big spiders — just particularly evil ones. The big ones, the huntsmans and daddy-long-legs-es, don't bite, they just (huntsmans at least) scare you. The funnel-webs, white-tails and redbacks are the dangerous ones, and they're all INCY-WINCY.

And you thought I wasn't going to be relevant.

[identity profile] jl-in-the-lane.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Huntsmen FREAK ME OUT.

As for funnelwebs, white-tails and redbacks - I refuse to admit they exist. They're too scary to contemplate.

DaddyLongLegs are interesting, though, because when I was staying in Britain, they also had DLLs, but they weren't spiders, they were gigantic flying mosquitoes. Kinda. DREADFUL things.

From what I recall of that Mythbusters episodes, DDLs can. It just doesn't hurt much. (And Adam had several crawling over his arm and it took a while for just one of them to do it, so maybe they just don't do it often.)

...I have no logical argument concerning this. Just.

ITSY BITSY.

AGREED.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing the default would be Incy winsy because that is the original version. :~P

My mother says that was the version she learnt at school in the 1930s anyway.

Itsy bitsy is clearly the American version...!!

I see your mother and raise you a mother who learned 'itsy bitsy' in the 1920s. *g*

Hee! Short of a seance I cannot check with any even older relative... I guess we'll just have to settle for there being two spiders climbing two spouts on opposite sides of the Atlantic!
