Well, one reason is the house came that way, lol.

But on a practical note, the pantry holds items we stock up on. For example, if peanut butter is on sale, we will buy 8 jars (knowing that within three months time, Zachary will have eaten all of them).

My cabinets couldn't possibly hold all the food we have in the house. Most of my cabinets hold dishes, glassware, cookware, bakeware, various kitchen appliances. But the cabinet next to the sink holds 5 different vinegars, two oils, soy sauce, marinades, etc. Another set of cabinets hold flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, rice, other grains, some tall bottles that don't fit elsewhere.
My pantry basically is for canned goods that have a long shelf life.
