a few notes of randomness

- Kate Lockley is much more awesome than I remember her being.

- Josh is cute, but very frustrating when he won't stop crying.

- Caramel slice needs more crushed biscuit in it, next time.

- Cross-stitch takes FOREVER.

- Terry Pratchett is rather fabulous.

- I should never take BtVS season 4 out of my collection and leave the rest sitting there, because it means I currently have an eyeless Buffy staring at me from across the room... with her disembodied eyes sitting elsewhere, and also staring at me.

- Nephew-wrangling is an elite skill, and should come with a manual.

- There is such a thing as too much chocolate mud cake.

- Angel wearing hawaiian shirts is rather hilarious.

I've been a Kate Lockley fan from pretty much the very beginning. I love the sense of, like, reality that she brings to a show that so often wanders off into such crackiness. If a driven, hard-bitten cop was confronted with what she's confronted with, I'd expect the cop to react pretty much as she reacts. Ats really needed that reality check now and then, I think, and there was a real hole when she left.

Funny... that's what I was going to say...

You were watching Sense and Sensitivity, weren't you?

(And yaaay Kate!)

Josh is cute, but very frustrating when he won't stop crying.

Tell me about it. His trick last night involved screaming suddenly at high terror volume. Many times. For no reason.
Thankyou for minding him. I really appreciated it.

Did you have too much, or did you just hear this rumour from someone else?

Kate is so fun.

I'm dorky like that. (Plus I watched that one a few weeks ago.)

Definitely an underrated character. She needs more fic.

There really was. I wish they could have found a way to keep her around more.

I think they needed less "a way to keep her around" and more not just booting her off. I couldn't see much reason for her to leave at the end of S2, other than we seemed bound and determined to chuck several of our most interesting secondary characters about then: Kate, Lindsey (until S5), Dru, and for the most part Darla.

Ohh, so you must have one of those fancy box sets, then? Mine are all from like half.com, and previously used.

My friend has the cool Angel box set though, and we enjoy taking out certain seasons to give him, say, no chin, or no face or whatever. Very humorous.

I think I heard that she had some actor conflict and they needed to kick her out. But yeah, very sad.

Yep! I have Buffy and Angel both looking out into my living room.

(Actually, had they not sold complete boxsets of all the seasons together, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying the shows at all - because I'm strange like that - and thus would not know them nearly as well as I do.)

I watched them with my friend on her DVDs at first, and then finally manned up and...ordered family members and friends to buy seasons for various birthdays and Christmases...

I now have all of Buffy and Angel, but it took awhile. :D

I actually bought most of Buffy without having seen it.

Seriously - I got up to Spike's entrance in School Hard, went "okay, this is just too fun not to own", and bought the entire seven seasons.

*will regret this*

Is that 'Spike's Entrance', meaning, 'the first time we see him, ever'?

Or is it Spike, whom we already know, entering in spectacular fashion?

(Complicatedness coming up…)

The thing is, in season 1, the vampires are very… traditional. They say things like "your life is forfeit" and "my body is your instrument", and they have a "master", and gothic music, and are basically boring and overacting.

I kind of liked the show, but the vampires were annoying.

And then came season 2.

Season 1's villain is The Master. Who spends most of his time lurking in his evil lair, making dramatic speeches, and killing underlings.

Season 2's villain is clearly going to be The Anointed One. Who is a prophesied Leader Of Vampires (in the body of a ten year old), and spends most of his time sitting on a throne, looking serious and stern, and getting underlings to kill each other.

So, three episodes in, there's this opening scene, in which a big black car smashes into the Welcome To Sunnydale sign, and a guy wearing army boots and a big black coat gets out - and, to the accompaniment of some funky rock music, he looks around and says "Home sweet home".

…which is not the scene I'm talking about.

Anyway, more stuff happens.

And then we see The Vampires, talking to their Great Leader The Anointed One, and discussing The Slayer, and Destiny, and other capitalised words like that.

And Big Dramatic Vampire says the following, in a very dramatic voice:
This weekend, the night of St. Vigeous, our power shall be at its peak. When I kill her, it'll be the greatest event since the crucifixion. And I should know. I was there.

It's all very dramatic and monumental.

And then, from behind him, a sneering voice speaks up:
You were there? Oh, please! If every vampire who said he was at the crucifixion was actually there,
it would have been like Woodstock.

Of course, no self-respecting creature of the night can put up with an insult like this. Big Dramatic Vampire glares, and says:
I oughta rip your throat out.

Which this new vampire completely ignores, turning his back and continuing to soliloquise:
I was actually at Woodstock. That was a weird gig. I fed off a flowerperson, and I spent the next six hours watchin' my hand move.

…at which point the Big Dramatic Vampire rushes up behind him to punch him, and, without turning his head, the new vampire smacks his fist straight into BDV's face, knocking him out.

This is the scene commonly referred to as Spike's Entrance. With one fell swoop, he completely changes what it means to be a Buffyverse vampire. They go from dramatic and pompous to fun and resourceful.

The rest of the episode includes Spike saying things like:
"Yeah, I did a couple Slayers in my time. I don't like to brag. (laughs) Who am I kidding? I love to brag!"

"People still fall for that Anne Rice routine. What a world!"

And calling The Anointed One "the annoying one".

By the end of that first episode, he's killed the Anointed One, taken over leading the town's vampires, and settled down to watch some television.

He's rather awesome.

Ah. I see.

*looks at Josh, who pauses, mid-scream, to smile angelically*

Thankyou for the explanation.
