it just sounds wrong...

When my New World Order takes control of the galaxy, people's names will have to be pronounced exactly as I expect them to sound based on the spelling.

After a year and a half of seeing "Dr Rodney McKay" in print, I'm now having to adjust to the fact that his name does not rhyme with "sigh" (as all previous "McKay"s I've known did), but instead rhymes with "say".
This is confusing me...

*g* I was wondering why rhyming with sigh would make sense. Then I said it out loud and it sounds very Aussie, which would make tons of sense for you.

It is irritating when something like that happens.

It is, kinda.

Could very well be the product of using a name you're not familiar with, though "McKay" sounds rather ordinary. I've been misled by "Dana" and "Emil" before, and they're not terribly unusual.

See, that's the thing. I've known four different families with the surname of "McKay", and all of them pronounced it the same way. So I kinda thought I knew how to pronounce it by now...

[identity profile] mabus101.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it may be that the writers who created Rodney's character didn't know.

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2008-11-02 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm - but if they had to pronounce it as it is spelled they'd all have to rhyme it with say.

Except that if I try saying 'say' with an Australian accent it rhymes with sigh...

I know a family with that very surname and they pronounce it Mackee. All Mac and the rest a tiny little 'ee'.

you expect McKay to rhyme with 'sigh'? How very odd. but it has 'Kay' written at the end, like the way you pronounce the letter 'K'!
You're weird, Mez...
btw, the man hisself, David Hewlett, is very very awesome in person. Such fun. And he loves TimTams! Ah, you shoulda come to Armageddon... :-)

I am indeed weird. Have you just figured this out?

But seriously! I know so many McKays, and I've never ever heard it pronounced the way Rodney does! It's so strange!

I really shoulda gone to Armageddon...

[identity profile] immer-am-lesen.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no. But you will keep confirming it...

Really? That's strange...I've never known any, so can't compare. There's a place somewhere in Aus. pronounced 'macai'...how is that spelt?

Yeah, it was fun. Though the queues sucked. Poor David had such long lines for autographs and photos...! He was a very good sport though. Check out my FB profile pic... :-D

I love your profile pic...

Me too. I just get all happy whenever I look at it... :-)

He rocks. He's so much like McKay in speech and mannerisms, but so
much warmer and friendlier too. And a good sport- hour after hour of signing, smiling for photos, talking to a packed room, being made to try vegemite on stage....

[identity profile] immer-am-lesen.livejournal.com 2008-11-03 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
oh, btw- AMANDA TAPPING is coming to Armageddon next year.
Dude.
The cheering from the packed room (this was announced at the end of David's panel) were deafening...
So, if she comes, and they can ensure Michael does come this time...
I'm so there.

IN MY NEW WORLD ORDER THERE IS NOTHING BUT CHOCOLATE.

Okay, not true. There's also frozen yogurt. And ice cream. And fan fic. And books.

But no silly "names" to pronounce.
