Does the rest of the world seriously NOT have lemon lime and bitters?

(By which I mean the drink known as LL&B - I'm aware that you guys have lemons.)

o.O

How will I survive?

It sounds like something I should try sometime. But I have no idea what "bitters" taste (tastes?) like... I usually don't do so well with bitter flavors...

[identity profile] padawanspider.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Looked up "bitters" on Wikipedia... basically it's just an extract (as in vanilla extract) of just about anything?

Oddly enough, I'm not one for bitter flavours. At ALL.

"Bitters", though, as in the thing you pour in drinks, is really nice. As long as you add it to drinks, and don't try to drink it straight. (REALLY. Don't try to drink it straight.)

I'm still completely staggered that you guys don't have LL&B. It's the standard drink in Australia.
Seriously. It's the equivalent of going into a pub and ordering "a beer". No-one needs any clarification - because every single cafe, restaurant, nightclub, bar, and so on serves several hundred LL&B's every day...

I suppose I'll have to find out if Outback Steakhouse makes 'em. ;) It does sound absolutely delicious.

From their drinks menu, it doesn't look like it.

Mind you, it being the Outback Steakhouse, I'm not surprised. The majority of their stuff has nothing to do with Australia.

And the dessert name "Chocolate Thunder From Down Under" makes all the Aussies I know stare in amazement, before bursting out laughing.
We think the O.S. is extremely entertaining, in its general cluelessness. (They have, at least, stopped referring to the Bloomin' Onion as "an ab-original", which was horrifyingly racist.)

*facepalms*

The O.S. just gets me like that...

It's all good. You're not the only one who has trouble catching jokes. *points at self*

From Laney

'Chocolate Thunder from Down Under.'
(gulps in horror)
Do people actually order this?
It sounds like... umm, like it belongs in the toilet.
Surely the Yanks would have the same reaction...

(Any idea what it IS?)

Chocolate brownie topped with ice cream and fudge syrup.

Honestly, the Australian meaning of the name had never crossed my mind. Now I'll think of that every time I look at an Outback menu...

A name which promotes much sniggering from this part of the world...

Oh dear, yes, Outback Steakhouse...
Every Aussie who comes across this atrocity gasps in horror at the oh so very 'Australian' (read in a very broad yank accent) aspects of their menu.
I could rant on and on about this.
Chocolate thunder from down under (*shakes head in disbelief*)

Read their menu, Aussies, if you haven't!

*waves arm in teh air* Ooh, i tried drinking Bitters straight once, when I was young and desperate for a drink....
NEVER again.
Blargh.

I like it 'cause it's like a more grown-up thing to ask for than 'oh, i'll just have a softdrink *sigh*' at a pub/ bar...

I had one once that was awful though, I swear the lady had never made one before. She used soda water instead of lemonade. SODA water. Ewwww....I gave it back, and asked for it to be made with lemonade....and watched her make it this time...
tsk.

But yes, they rock. And look so pretty!

I know! They're so very pretty!

That's why I hate it when people make them and STIR them before giving them to me. You have to get the chance to see the whole thing with the yellow up the top, and the red down the bottom...

[identity profile] immer-am-lesen.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
...and teh bottled ones, thought tasting similar, aren't a patch on the freshly-poured ones.
Yum.
Now you're making me thirsty.

[identity profile] padawanspider.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thirsty's the least of my problems, I want to go to Australia now!

Ooh. Come! We could drink pretty drinks, and enjoy the summeryness...

...if you live in land that has lemony lemonade, and Bitters, and lime cordial, you're set, no need to travel.
If not...well, things can always be mailed. I sent a bottle of Red Cordial to a friend in the US because she had no idea what cordial was...let alone Red cordial... :-)
