It's all [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor's fault, when you get right down to it.

In 2005, during a regular old lunchtime at uni, I happened to mention that I'd never seen Firefly. Two minutes later, I had the dvd in my hands, and [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor was standing over me, making me promise that I would watch it that very evening, or face her wrath.

So, I took home Firefly. And I watched it.

_____________

Why am I posting this now? Because my flist has been passing round a meme about which dvds they own – and it got me thinking.

(You'll see what I mean.)
_____________

Firefly to Buffy; Buffy to the internet

If not for Firefly, I would never have seen Serenity.
And, when I was bored that summer, I wouldn't have decided to look into what else this Whedon guy had done.

But I did. And I spent my summer discovering Buffy.
...and then Angel.

Then I went on the internet, and discovered Whedonesque.
...and Jane Espenson's blog.
...and a few Whedonesquers here on LJ.

Roleplaying

Because I liked Firefly, I bought (and ran) the Serenity tabletop RPG. And a supplement.
Because I liked Buffy, I bought (and ran) the Buffy RPG. And two supplements.

Music

Then there were the soundtracks.

I bought the Firefly soundtrack, and the Serenity soundtrack.
And then the BtVS soundtrack, then the second Buffy soundtrack, and the AtS soundtrack.
And then there was the Buffy musical soundtrack. And then the Buffy score.

Then there was Michelle Branch, who'd sung so wonderfully during Tabula Rasa, Kim Richey, who'd sung during A Hole in the World, and Aimee Mann, who'd sung during Sleeper. So I bought their cds.

And James Marsters. He was pretty cool, so I bought his cd too.

And Fred liked the Dixie Chicks - so I checked out one of their cds. I now own 19 different country & western cds.

Fanficcers and Wider Fandom

Like I said, I'd friended a few Whedonesquers on LJ. So, when Strikethrough07 happened, [livejournal.com profile] simonf's LJ directed me to discussion about it on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom.
...which led me to other interesting discussions on that comm.
...which led me to an X-Men mpreg, and the discovery that fanfic could be worth reading.
...which led me to Buffy fic.

And that led me to 94 of the people on my f'list. 94 people whom I never would have met, were it not for [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor's insistence on my watching this weird show about cowboys in space.

TV ...and the rest

Meanwhile, I was looking for more tv shows.

Joss Whedon had gone on Whedonesque and recommended Veronica Mars, so I bought that.

Jane Espenson kept mentioning My Name Is Earl and How I Met Your Mother, so I bought those too.

And Eliza Dushku has remarkably pretty hair, so I bought Tru Calling, as well.

Seth Green was doing this show called Robot Chicken, so I got that.

And people kept mentioning Wonderfalls, so I got that.

I saw Cloverfield because Drew Goddard was involved.

I saw Snakes on a Plane because Henry Jenkins (whom I'd found during the Fanlib debacle) had discussed it.

I saw Life on Mars because [livejournal.com profile] simonf had mentioned it.

I bought a couple of seasons of Xena because [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle reminded me how fun it was.

My f'list was raving about BSG and Sarah Connor Chronicles, so I bought them, too.

Joss started writing Runaways, so I read an issue of that - and liked it so much that I bought all the earlier ones.

And then there were Buffyverse comics – like Fray, Shadow Puppets, and so forth.

And the comicbook shop had all these fascinating books – so I bought four of those. Oh, and I also bought a mini Serenity.

[livejournal.com profile] cereta kept talking about Middleman, so I bought the comicbook version of that.

And then there was a vid by [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup which featured a song by the Dresden Dolls – so I bought their cd.

And a Firefly vid with a song from Wicked, so I went and saw that, and then bought the soundtrack too.

And another vid someone on my flist recced - so I watched that, and promptly bought a Wise Guys cd, because that song was just excellent.

And [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat was raving about Jonathan Coulton, so I bought his songs too.

I'm not sure where the inspiration for the rest of these came from – but I know for a fact that my f'list are entirely responsible for the fact that I own The Dresden Files (the first season, and also three of the novels), Pushing Daisies (the first season, so far), Star Trek Voyager (just one season), and Mad Men.

Then, of course, there's Dollhouse, which I had to buy due to being a fan of pretty much everyone involved, Avatar: the Last Airbender, which was discussed on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom and looked far too pretty, and Castle, which was also a [livejournal.com profile] metafandom find.

And then there were five novels by Naomi Novik (a fanficcer) and one by Kit Whitfield (from Slacktivist - discovered through my f'list).

AND IT'S ALL [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor'S FAULT.

Were it not for her, my bank account would be much more substantial, I would not have seen half of my now-favourite tv shows, I wouldn't own 36 different seasons of television currently on my bookcase, I wouldn't have written over 100 fanfics (or, in fact, have written anything at all for the last two years), I wouldn't have gone into the city purely to see Amber Benson do a Q&A, I wouldn't have friends on the other side of the world, I wouldn't have shelled out over $100 to send Valentine's Day cards to people I'd never met, I wouldn't have gone to Can't Stop The Serenity, I wouldn't have a teeny spaceship flying round my desk at work, I'd be a lot less interesting, and I wouldn't have heard of any of you.

For the record? Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor. You ruined my life – and you pretty much rock.

*g* (And I'm forever forgetting who's seen what... *facepalm*)

Aren't they just? I watched Buffy (not Angel until later), and it was this scene - points to icon - which doomed me. Although I didn't discover fandom etc until post-Chosen. The rest is history! :)

Um... I DISTINCTLY remember you absolutely refusing to watch DW for AGES and AGES. For the very good reason that you had too many shows on your plate. But we won you over in the end.

Certainly, but what I mean is, my watching of Doctor Who had nothing to do with Firefly, and much more to do with you guys and [livejournal.com profile] kerithave's parents. :)

Can I just say, "Sing it, sister!" Your life is my life, except with the details slightly sideways and on a different side of the same ocean. And I can't blame [livejournal.com profile] nquisitor, who sounds swell, but I managed to ruin my life all on my own. Of course, a few LJ friends helped to fine tune the job...

Hey, I have no one to blame but myself as well! =)

One of these days I should take a picture of the many bookcases I have that are stacked to overflowing with DVDs and now blu-rays...

oh, lovely story and it so resembles mine, I also came to fandom via Firefly initially :)

And I also played in a tabletop firefly rpg round. It was so much fun and we had such an insane little crew.

How did your campaign develop? What characters did you have?

Really enjoyed how you took a meme and made it into an interesting narrative.

Such a wonderful post! Whenever I hear someone sneering about fannish people and how they "have too much time on their hands," I think of things like this, and know being a rabid fangirl actually makes life incredibly rich.

One of my very best friends, who lives 2 1/2 hours from me, is someone I met when we lived a couple of thousand miles apart -- I met her when she commented on my fics. I have a fangirl coming to visit for a couple of days in March (we bonded over h/c at Writercon) and another in April (we met over Buffy and now both fangirl SPN). As a fannish friend pointed out, when you move halfway across the country (as I did), you have a whole set of friends who don't change, amid all the other seismic changes that take place. LJ is still here, and those friends are still here.

Pretty amazing stuff!

Whedonesque brought me to LJ too. But it was my love of Dorothy Dunnett that took me to Whedonesque when I discovered there was a Yahoo list for DD fans who also liked
Buffy
. Several of my LJ friends were on that list too.

Just think how empty our lives would be without all those knock-on effects. It's the Whedon version of the butterfly flapping its wings. I might have got a lot more work and sewing done. But I'm happy with the trade-off.

Awww, I'm touched! And not just because you made me sound much taller than I actually am...

And this is why I have - or so I am told - a ridiculously large dvd collection and why I am compelled to share and recommend with everyone I know: these are not passive activities (no matter what They will have you believe); they enrich your life in ways you would have never thought possible.

Now I just need to be sure, because I'm far away now: you have been watching Being Human, right? ;)
