Missing Words
Sep. 27th, 2008 08:21 amMy nouns keep disappearing.
I've been trying to relearn some German lately.
Back in 1998 (that's ten years ago - wow) I spent three months in Germany, and was pretty much fluent in German by the time I came home. By now, of course, I've forgotten most of it.
So I've been trying to relearn bits of it, by watching German movies and reading books. The other day I found some novels which have German on one page, and the English translation on the other - they're very helpful.
And I've discovered that, if I push myself, I can remember quite a lot.
Except for the nouns.
I can read almost anything, perfectly, without even thinking, until it gets to a noun. And suddenly I'm stuck.
Which is a problem, because nouns tend to get used quite a lot.
And it's nice, knowing that I can remember quite a lot of this language (and some quite tricky bits, too), but honestly - what kind of person can translate "possibility of recalling" without thinking, but gets stuck on "wall"?
