So, back in April, I took some time to tell the world about Tempus from Lois&Clark, and how wonderful he is.

And now I'm back, to tell you all about another brilliant TV villain: Harvey, from Farscape.

The Intricacies Of Harvey-Spotting

Harvey is a character who looks almost exactly like another character called Scorpius.

Even though they're identical, there are some subtle ways to tell the difference. For instance...

This is Scorpius:

And this is Harvey:

Scorpius:

Harvey:

See?

Scorpius

Scorpius is the show's main villain. He is evil, violent, sadistic, and very nasty.

He's also after John Crichton (the HERO). Or, more precisely, he's after the information that's hidden in John Crichton's brain.

He can't get Crichton to tell him the information, so he decides to be sneaky. Which, in this situation, involves inserting a computer chip into Crichton's brain that will take over his mind, dissolve his personality, and retrieve the info. (What a brilliant brilliant plan! Ahahahaha!!!)

The Computer Chip ...otherwise known as "Harvey"

So, there's a computer chip in Crichton's brain, which is supposed to stop him from killing humans find out lots of interesting information. And also, incidentally, send Crichton completely crazy.

This is not a simple zap-you-when-you-vamp-out computer chip. It has a very complicated job to do. So Scorpius gives it a personality.

In fact, he gives it his personality.

So, Crichton starts hallucinating Scorpius all over the place, like this:

evil!Crichton

The computer chip proceeds to basically take over Crichton's brain. To the point where Crichton's barely there anymore.

(This can be demonstrated by a fantastically creepy scene, where this is what Aeryn (the woman) thinks is happening:

And here's what's really happening:

Very, very creepy.)

Bye-bye chip!

Then the computer chip finds the info, and Scorpius comes and removes the chip, and leaves Crichton to his own devices.

Woo! Bye, creepy virtual-Scorpius!

Harvey

The thing is, even though the chip's gone, the digitally created Scorpius in Crichton's head has been there for so long that he decides to stick around...

...and he decides to keep controlling Crichton's every action because, hey, it's fun. And mwahaha! the power!

Which almost works.

But then Crichton realises that, in fact, with the chip gone, "Harvey" (as he is now called) is basically powerless. And kinda puny.

So, he retreats inside his own mind, and proceeds to beat the crap out of Harvey, and throw him in a dumpster, to wild applause.

(No, really. Look.)

The fight (with wild applause):

The dumpster:

Yay for Crichton!

Advice

The thing is, even though he's powerless and in a mental dumpster, he's still there. And also, Harvey's entire existence basically depends on Crichton's brain still existing. So Harvey actually has a pretty good reason to keep Crichton safe.

And, because he's sort of Scorpius, he actually knows a lot of useful information...

So, occasionally, Crichton retreats into his own brain, and asks Harvey for advice.

(Remember, this show is set IN SPACE. Really. It's on a spaceship, in space.)

And, because we're inside Crichton's head, we get lots of interesting scenes like this:

Or this:

Or on a rollercoaster:

Or a cartoon character:

Or something like this:

Or World War II:

Or then there's this:

Or this:

(Did I mention this show is set in space?)

(Because, really. It's all in space.)

(Yep. Space.)

(Seriously. They're on a spaceship.)

(But Harvey's just... kind of in his own world.)

(And when he's around, things just make their own rules.)

By the way... did I mention you should be watching Farscape?

Because Harvey's just the tip of the increasingly-crazy iceberg.

Go watch it. Now.
