Congratulate me, for I have definitive proof that time travel must be possible: the Stargate characters are no longer behaving in ways that are likely to get them killed.

Obviously, some enterprising young Hollywood writers read my Live Journal, found themselves a time machine, went back ten years or so, infiltrated the Stargate writing team, and started submitting radical new scripts where SG1 were not being ridiculously silly.
Well done, writers! I applaud you!

This extremely pleasant turn of events began with Enigma, in which some extremely smart and advanced people are rescued by SG1, refuse to tell them anything, express their liking of cats, walk through some walls, and then go and live with the Nox instead.
Tell me - why is it that technologically advanced civilisations are always so wise and peaceful in this show? I think we're supposed to admire them, but they come across as kind of snobby and irritating. But then, so did the Nox. I'm sure the two groups will get along famously.

And then we're onto Solitudes, and the group once again behave in a fairly sensible manner. Jack, of course, refuses any kind of medical care even though he's coughing up blood - but that's just Jack being stubborn rather than anything more serious...
Plus, the weird kidnapping people after the Stargate was buried thing has been explained! Kind of. I'm not entirely sure why the Goa'uld would bother making their new slaves trek all the way up to Antarctica rather than putting the second Stargate somewhere closer, but there must have been some sort of reason for it.

Tin Man was also quite fun - I only have one real question. Why is robo-Teal'c so much stronger than robo-Jack? Aren't they both... robots? Surely they're made of the same stuff.
Jack once again exhibits his fabulous ideas of proper medical care by slicing through his own arm. Of course, being all robotic he just exposes a few wires, but still! He's cutting into his wrist! In standard suicide-style! If he HADN'T been a robot, he would have died pretty quickly... and yet no-one tries to stop him. Hmm.

Next we have There But For The Grace Of God, in which Daniel travels to a mirror universe in which everyone has long hair.
(Actually, looking at the dvd cover, the photo they've chosen for this particular episode shows Sam with short hair - why put her on the dvd cover if she's not even funky long-haired alternate-dimension Sam?)
Anyway, this episode was lots of fun - mainly because Daniel's really entertaining when he's confused.

The second-last episode of the season was Politics - and it was a flashback episode!
A frelling flashback episode!
Clearly, my time-traveling writers experienced a hostile takeover, and the original writers once again got their hands on the script.
I glared at the annoying politician guy, and spent the flashback-y bits doing the dishes...

And finally... Within The Serpent's Grasp. Only... not finally.
Apparently the hostile takeover was averted, and the original writers agreed that my time-travelers could write an excellent episode as long as the original guys could put a "to be continued" at the end of it...
YOU CAN'T DO THAT TO ME! I WON'T BE ABLE TO GET MY HANDS ON THE NEXT SEASON FOR DAYS! IT'S COMPLETELY UNFAIR!
Grrr. Aargh.

So, yeah. Finished season one (finally).
And I'd like to propose a toast to the wonderful time travel guys who managed to avert a disaster. Go writers! You rock!

*retreats back to watching old episodes of Red Dwarf in a desperate attempt not to think about that "to be continued"...*
