Funds

Head of Fundraising Committee was supposed to be a way to look good on college applications. To demonstrate competence and school spirit.
How hard could it be?

But a very expensive school mascot was eaten, the funds for the marching band were spent entirely on comic books, the swim team's final meet was cancelled, and the play tickets had to be refunded because of the monkeys.
She herself wasn't entirely blameless - for some reason she'd spent their savings on a present for Xander Harris. It'd seemed important at the time.

Trisha wished fervently that she'd settled for Yearbook Staff.

Alternate Realities Are Neat

There is a theory.

That every time you make a choice, you also make the other choice – and the universe splits in two.

She ponders this as she sets the table for dinner.

Perhaps, in another world, she had not married.

Maybe she never had children.

Or had six more.

Maybe her husband had been killed in the troll attack five years ago.

Perhaps there are even worlds where Olaf had not loved her quite so dearly – where he hadn’t always been faithful.

But he’s back, so Aud stops her musing, and goes to welcome him home.

Contrary to popular mythology, blood stains are easy to shift.
In cold water overnight, and then two cycles through the machine – works every time. She’s practically an expert at that.

Memories, on the other hand, tend to stick around.

Causing death to dead things, you start to think it’s nothing.
But stick a knife through the gut of someone who gasps for breath as it kills them,
even someone who betrayed you
tortured you
tried to kill you
tried to kill your lover
you’ll discover you’re not as callous as you thought.

Death marks you.
And some stains don’t shift.

Big Break

His letters back to LA said he was singing at The Palms, Las Vegas.

The truth? A nice Italian franchise, The Palm, had opened a restaurant in Nevada, and he was their new DJ.

(Hey – one letter’s difference isn’t that big a lie, right? And messy as his writing is, he can always say that they just read it wrong.)

The owner was nice enough, and he got free lasagne and salad every night. But this really wasn’t why he came to Vegas.

When the man from the Tropicana offered him a new job, he accepted without a second thought.
