Lightning Lady To The Rescue!
Sep. 19th, 2008 09:59 amI keep giving my cat static shocks.
It's weird, because I haven't, as far as I know, been hyper-electrified in a government experiment, or implanted with micro-capacitors by aliens, or struck by lightning, or bitten by a radioactive electric eel, or anything like that - but lately, for no reason whatsoever, I've been getting sparks of static electricity every time I go through any of the doors at work (metal handles - the ones at home are ceramic).
And I do mean every time.
Currently, I am incapable of touching metal things at work without my fingers going all sparky.
And it's not just work: like I said, my cat is getting to experience this weirdness as well.
He came over to the couch the other night, and I reached down to pat him and got a mini static shock. Which was weird, but not really that significant.
But then it happened again.
And again.
All evening, no matter how I touched my cat, I'd get static electricity hitting me the moment I made contact with his fur. It was uncanny.
Unfortunately for Elf, I am a scientist at heart - so my initial reaction to this happening was to check if it really was, by some controlled experimentation. My poor boy had to endure several minutes of being picked up, patted, put down, and picked up again - and getting shocked EVERY SINGLE TIME - before I decided that no, I wasn't imagining things…
My super-shock! powers seem to have faded slightly since then - I have in fact picked up my cat without changing voltage several times now - but I still end up reverting to my natural, shocky self at least once a day. Usually while Elf is happily relaxing on my bed, without a care in the world.
I’m half feeling sorry for him, and half wondering if I should get myself a cape and mask and start fighting crime…

And you know, while I have been wearing stockings more recently (spring being here, so I can finally stop wearing pants), I was in jeans and a tshirt yesterday, so I don't think it can just be that...
