After two years of using forks, I finally caved and got a potato masher.

So, I've got a question:
Why on earth didn't I do that earlier?

It makes mashing so easy...

You didn't get a ricer? I love my ricer. That's much, much easier than even a masher.

In this case I must echo Buffy. What the heck is a ricer?

A ricer makes potatoes so easy. You just put them in the can, drop down the lid and squeeze. It's instantly turned into tiny "rice like" bits that only need milk and butter. And you can puree other veggies in it as well.

Oh really? Huh, I need a ricer too then.

Ohhh...

It looks sort of like a garlic crusher.

I've tried a masher, but find they just don't work so well for me. I use my mouli. :-)

I still prefer a fork. I use a masher for the beginning bit but switch to a fork when adding the milk and butter. I tell myself it's fluffier with a fork but I think it's just that my mother did it that way and therefore so do I.

Did someone show you/teach you how to mash potatoes using forks?

Cause that's exactly why I used to use a large spoon to make gravy with until the time I used a whisk instead and I haven't used a spoon to make gravy since.

the "ricer" looks like a garlic crusher and the mouli looks like some kind of vege spinner.

Ricer or Mouli are the same: US vs Euro terms. Lovely to use, but a pain to clean if you don't have a dish-washer (electric or employee).
A good masher is good, a Mouli is good. A chefs sieve is great if you are making lots and want it very silky.

Actually, the mouli isn't quite the same as a ricer- I assume the ricer uses just hand pressure to squish the potatoes through the holes- the mouli uses the hand-rotated blade pressing the potatoes against the sieve-disc-thing to force them through. A bit more work, I imagine. :-) Then again, I've never used a ricer.
I find rinsing it straight after use, and getting a brush into the holes works just fine for cleaning it.

Mashers are still something approaching hard work, so off for a ricer. *g*

You are not alone. Universal kitchen law #3 = the gadgets you buy because they'll be useful are dust catchers you'll never use(I'm looking at you, spice grinder). The gadgets you resist, however, turn out to be incredibly useful to the point you regret not cracking earlier. Sigh.
