I have discovered the perfect location for filming a prison movie.

Yesterday arvo, I went on an excursion to see a tiestation. Seriously - an excursion. We drove there, looked at interesting things, and then left. No work involved, really.

Anyway, this tiestation is a building where they control some of the power output to train lines (or something like that - there's a REASON I quit electrical). These days, the necessary equipment could probably fit in a small office, but most of the tiestations were constructed back in the days when "electrician" was a high-risk job, right up there with mountain climber, astronaut, and suicide bomber. Some of the old ground floor equipment could be controlled by levers on the first floor, so that on the rare occasions (not more than twice a month) when the machines exploded as they were turned on, you wouldn't die in the blast.

Most of the original equipment is long gone, of course. It's been replaced by much newer stuff - from the early 40's.

(As a side note - this is why the railways don't employ many repairmen. Most of the people who understand how this stuff works died several decades ago. If one piece of equipment stops working, they just plug in the next one - and hope that they've figured out a new design before all of it stops working.)

Anyway, the tiestation is a HUGE old building, and from the outside it looks kind of reminiscent of a prison. Or so we joked.

Then we went inside.

Picture the prisoners eating lunch in brick rooms, with the guards patrolling walkways overhead, and you'll have a fairly accurate idea of the south side of this place.

On the north side, though, it's a bit more enclosed. This is where all the more isolated equipment is kept - in (I am not kidding) "Cells A to N", which are all accessible from a long walkway. Each of the Cells is separated from the walkway only by a wire mesh gate - just perfect for the guards to check up on the prisoners without needing to enter each room individually.

There's also a machine - well, if I put a metal seat in the room and set up coiled wires running from the machine to the chair, you'd think you'd just entered an authentic execution chamber.

I'm already writing the script and mentally casting the chief warden...
