Surreal Experience

This afternoon, I failed to recognise my very own nephew for over ten seconds.
This is all because Alex had a birthday party - the kind with aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins all in the one location, all at once.
And... this gets complicated. So I'll try to explain in a systematic fashion...
Systematic Explaining
my nephew = Caleb
Caleb looks like his father
Caleb's father = my brother-in-law
he is married to my sister (hereafter referred to as Sister2)
she, in turn, has a sister (not me - the other one), known as Sister1
(Sister1 = Alex's mum)
Sister1 is married to a man who shall be known simply as M
M has a sister ("M's Sister")
M's Sister is married to a man we'll call T
and they have kids
M's Sister's kids look like their father (T)
...got all of that?
The line-up of adults basically goes like this:
Sister2's husband --> Sister2 --> Sister1 --> M --> M's Sister --> T
...with kids off each end of the line, who each look like the person on their end.
On one end, there's Caleb, who looks like his father. On the other end, there's D, J, & B - who look like their father.
And there I was, standing in the kitchen, when D & J walked in, followed instantly by Caleb.
AND THEY LOOKED EXACTLY THE SAME.
Honestly - I thought for several seconds there that my nephew Caleb, who I see every single week, was B (who I see once a year at Alex's birthday), because he looked exactly like these two boys who are not at all related to him, even though each of them look entirely like the most unrelated-to-each-other sides of their respective families.
It was weird.
In other news, we had a great day, filled with fun party games, cake, and backyard cricket.
And much cuddling of Josh, who gets cuter every day.
*loves my fantastic family*

Date: 2009-05-19 03:09 am (UTC)What's really weird is seeing a pic and thinking it's of your brother with your mum, then blinking and realising it's your dad, who somehow looks exactly like your bro in this one pic. Weird. Only ever happened with this one photo, but it keeps getting me.

Date: 2009-05-19 03:13 am (UTC)Saw a photo of my sister, and went "Hmm. I wonder who the baby that she's holding is..." and then realised that she was the baby, and that it was my mum holding her...

Date: 2009-05-19 03:29 am (UTC)Only other photo I've thought this of is a babypicture of my father on a swing, and he's the absolute spitting image of my bro as a little kid...he was even blonde as a child!
I guess we do take after our parents, occasionally.... :-)
