A Study In Contrasts
Jul. 2nd, 2009 07:23 pmThis week, I keep seeing LJ entries on my flist complaining about the heat.
And I keep almost responding with "Hah! Heat? You can walk barefoot outside without the skin on the bottom of your feet burning when you hit concrete. YOU DON'T KNOW HEAT."
...but then I remind myself that, any day now, I'm going to end up shivering enough to come on here and complain about the cold.
And I'll probably have half my flist wanting to respond with "Hah! Cold? You can walk outside gloveless without your fingers freezing and falling off. YOU DON'T KNOW COLD."
So, for the moment, I'll refrain...

Date: 2009-07-02 12:32 pm (UTC)Theres nothing anyone can do about the weather - we in England are pretty lucky, so you are not the only one who notices - although as your wether is the reverse, it is probably more noticable.

Date: 2009-07-02 12:44 pm (UTC)Twelve degrees. Twelve degrees?! That's not cold, that's balmy spring weather!
Today's high here is expected to be 31°, which, yeah, isn't fry-an-egg-on-the-pavement weather but still pretty hot. I have a very large fan next to my computer. Also not wearing an excessive amount of clothing, which is a benefit of working from home.

In my defense, I have it on good authority that Aussie clothing isn't really designed for cold weather - it's really thin and freezing - so we're likely to feel the cold through our clothes more than you guys are. (Plus, we're just pathetic and whingy.)
I'm inclined to believe that, mostly because I don't remember ever feeling all that cold in Germany.
But, yeah. We suck at cold weather over here. It's about 3 degrees overnight, and we're all very upset at the freezingness.
Saying "PAH!" snootily at 'HOT' weather
Date: 2009-07-03 02:00 pm (UTC)Calling 31 or even 33 HOT is rubbish.
It's officially HOT at 37. i.e. hotter outside your body than inside.
That's what I think. Sounds appropriately scientific, dontcha reckon?
*remembers Horror Week of 41-43-44-45 and shudders*
- in fact, I rather think it didn't drop below 35 for 10 days or so (Maz?), but my body gave up and decided to have a baby, so it all gets a bit hazy... I DO remember that when it hit 33, we all cried with relief.
(and then we had 46 and bushfires)
...oh dear God never again please...

Date: 2009-07-03 01:33 am (UTC)...when I remembered you're probably talking the good ol' Celsius. Righto. Carry on.

Date: 2009-07-03 01:59 am (UTC)(For future reference, 0 is when water freezes, 100 is when it boils, and 37 is standard body temperature.)
And interestingly, I just figured out the "37" by remembering that Buffy lists ideal blood temperature as 98.6, and then calculating backwards from Fahrenheit to Celcius...

Date: 2009-07-03 02:49 am (UTC)Hee! Yeah, I know 0 and 100 - I just can't take a Celsius temperature and mentally convert it - I know there's a formula, I mean from sight - into sense-making. Like, I see it, and think of it as if it were in Farenheit. If that makes sense...
Although, TBH, I kinda wished I'd been raised on the metric system - it's everywhere but America, and it makes SO much more sense.
And I always used to remember 98.6 because 98.7 was the name of a radio station my parents listened to (country, bleck). But then I'd get it confused...:P
Also, is it Celcius or Celsius? Cause LJ is calling Celcius wrong.

Date: 2009-07-03 03:18 am (UTC)(But it's a fun phrase, nonetheless.)
And hey, did you know that France once changed their system of time so it'd be metric-ish? As Wikipedia will kindly tell you, the days had 10 decimal hours, which consist of 100 decimal minutes, which consist of 100 decimal seconds. And then Napoleon came along and put a stop to all that nonsense.

Date: 2009-07-03 03:24 am (UTC)I did indeed know about the French being all weirdly decimal. I just love what the Brits called the French months...
