Here's a Spuffy ficlet, written for the "first" prompt at [livejournal.com profile] still_grrr.

(What was Buffy and Spike's first kiss, anyway?)

Succession

The first time Buffy kissed Spike – really kissed him, with lips touching softly, passionately, and breath coming faster every moment, and hands curling softly in hair, and the rest of the world melting away – it was perfect.

They were going to be together forever, the perfect couple, they were made for each other (and she couldn’t believe she’d never realised it before), and every problem would melt away, because love could conquer anything.

Their love was real, their wedding would be perfect, and they were going to live happily ever after.

She couldn’t understand why Giles was looking so annoyed.

* * * * *

The first time Buffy kissed Spike – really kissed him, not because of some spell telling her she wanted to, but because she really did – it was important.

Important that she tell him, important that he got what she meant, that she could show him it mattered, what he’d done, it mattered.

And even though she hated his guts, even though they were standing in a cemetery with dust making the air musty, even though his mouth was cut and bruised and swollen, even though he was completely evil… for one tiny moment, she really did mean every bit of it.

* * * * *

The first time Buffy kissed Spike – really kissed him, urgently needed to kiss him, needed to feel him kissing her back – it was real.

It was there.

And suddenly, she was there, too – not wanting to be there and not feeling real, not wishing she was somewhere else entirely, not thin and faded and barely existing, but there. Right there, right then. Kissing a vampire in an alley, with feeling flooding through her, everything rushing back in and making her her, holding her, grounding her, being real and solid and… there.

She felt more alive than she’d been in months.

* * * * *

The first time Buffy kissed Spike – really kissed him, definitely kissed him, because she’d thought it through, over and over, and plus she’d been wanting to for weeks now, and she just had to kiss him, right now, in case this was her last chance – it was different.

Tentative, and new; both of them uncertain and fumbling and really hoping the other person would keep kissing them back. Almost like they’d never done this before.

Maybe it was a bad idea – but she didn’t care. She was going to stay here kissing him, in case she never got to again.

* * * * *

The first time Buffy kissed Spike – really kissed him, properly, perfectly, with everything she had in her – it was…

It was messy. With demon corpses everywhere, and blood on his face, and green ooze covering her clothes… and she really didn’t care.

It was emotional. She wanted to hold him, to kill him for not telling her he wasn’t dead, to cry, to hit Angel for staring at them, to get her clothes de-oozed… and in the end she started giggling in between kisses, because it was so ridiculous.

It was Buffy kissing Spike. And that was all she wanted.

Sooooooooo... they don't kiss in gthe final episode, before Spike dies forever, again - because Joss thinks she belongs with Angel - but there's a convenient blackout in which we're allowed to assume they kiss if we're deluded enough to ship that way?

Is that right?

...technically there's a convenient blackout in which we're allowed to assume they had sex. As in an entire night of blackout, beginning with them alone together in the house's basement.

There are a lot of fanfics dealing with that scene, and what did or did not happen, and what conversations they may or may not have had.

Meh.

Sorry, I don't like that.

It just seems too ridiculously 'let's pander to the fangirls and keep them ALL happy and not be definite with this'-ish to me.
Doesn't quite ring true.
she said, in her infinite wisdom of BtVS and associated canonica...

(in other thoughts, you know that ongoing Types of Ships discussion we've been having occasionally - this leaves me wanting a Spuffy-Huddy type one with a canonical happy-ish-esque ending. Thoughts?

Leia/Solo?
Romione?

*raises eyebrow*

I think, in this case, I'm going to pull a but-you-haven't-seen-the-show.
Especially given that, as filmed, it's actually rather a nice scene.

Hmmm...

Technically, Joey/Pacey got a happily-ever-after (if you include the last two seasons, which I don't).

Apart from that...
Yeah, you're right. I can't think of any. (...except for Han/Leia.)

Of course, any couple getting a happily-ever-after is relatively unlikely, given how often TV couples break up.

(And, hey - Buffy/Spike sort of ended happily. If you don't count the fact that he burst into flames and blew up the town...)

Boo.

And I don't think Joey/Pacey works because she's wildly intelligent and he's completely non-academic - toooo much mis-match in my brain.
But I do do like the Katie Holmes stuff. :)

I think that this is because of a couple of things:

- the moonlighting effect, and the fact that tv shows usually AREN'T planned out ahead so the writers have to just grab at things as they go along (cf. a Han/Leia or Ron/Hermione);

but also - I think people genuinely don't know how to have a happily ever after without it being a 'perfect' in the context given above and-therefore-OOC one, which would make everyone raise their eyebrows and groan lots.

So maybe the question should be: can we think of a snarky couple with RST because they've gotten together earlier in the story (unlikely) or PRIOR to the story?

Ummm...

Arthur and Molly? (having just seen HP:HBP they're on my mind and I think we're meant to view R/Hr's future relationship as somewhat similar in feel...)

Ummm...
Ummm... (but several minutes later)

Ron and Hermione! I completely forgot about Ron and Hermione! *headdesk*

...and yes, I think you might be right.

Hehehe.

Have you ever read a fic on that one from a Bangel writer?

No...

Maybe I should go searching?

I think it's assumed because the First insults her by stating, "Asleep in your Dead lover's arms" suggesting that in order for him to be her current lover, sex had to have happened. I don't think Joss put that comment in there to refer to over a year prior. It sounded too current to be past tense. So I tend to think we were to imagine what the kiss was described as. You described it perfectly. Amazing fic.

I feel Spike and Buffy got about as happy of an ending as anyone did on Joss's show. He killed everyone off and usually after breaking their hearts. Every relationship Joss did ended up heartbreak or death. Spike and Buffy left us with hope for the future. Spike returned and never told Buffy so therefore the reunion takes place in our stories rather than possibly corrupted in the show. I think it's a perfect ending to a relationship. As Spike puts it, he died for her. How the heck do you top that ending to a relationship?

Yeah, their ending really was quite happy, Joss-wise.

Glad you liked this fic!
