Quoi? We totally don't have anything like one place for food - just lots of separate cabinet-like things with Lazy Susans around the kitchen, like how you don't put all your dishes in one big thing.
Do other people put their food in one big closet? I haven't really encountered that.
When you're cooking, it's a lot easier to have ingredients (especially spices, but also baking ingredients like flour, sugar, etc.) close at hand, so you don't have to walk back and forth.
Of course, ALL my food is stored in the kitchen, so it's not an issue for me.
But on a practical note, the pantry holds items we stock up on. For example, if peanut butter is on sale, we will buy 8 jars (knowing that within three months time, Zachary will have eaten all of them).
My cabinets couldn't possibly hold all the food we have in the house. Most of my cabinets hold dishes, glassware, cookware, bakeware, various kitchen appliances. But the cabinet next to the sink holds 5 different vinegars, two oils, soy sauce, marinades, etc. Another set of cabinets hold flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, rice, other grains, some tall bottles that don't fit elsewhere. My pantry basically is for canned goods that have a long shelf life.

*is slightly puzzled*
Why do you need two separate places? Won't all the food fit in the pantry?
