Here's a short Dawn ficlet I wrote for the "late" prompt at [community profile] buffy_ficcing.

Up Late

Buffy climbs in her window one night, carrying a backpack.

“What you been doing?”

She freezes, then realises it isn’t Mom. And her lips go tight and she says, “None of your business.”

“Have you been out with a boy?”

“Go to bed, Dawn.”

Dawn ignores her and sits on the bed. “Why did you break up with Tyler, anyway? I liked him.”

“Go to bed.”

“I don’t like your new boyfriend – even if he does have a motorcycle.”

Buffy stiffens. “How do you know about him?” she asks quietly.

“I saw him yesterday when he dropped you off. Why did you break up with Tyler? He was cute.”

She says nothing – just keeps putting things away in drawers that Dawn’s so going to check out later.

“Have you been going out with him every night? I bet Mom and Dad wouldn’t like that. I bet they’d be really mad about you sneaking out to see a boy. I bet–”

“Shut up!”

“Is he why you cut your hair? I thought it looked better long.”

Dawn…”

“Why do you keep sneaking out your window to see him, anyway? That’s really dumb. Mom wouldn’t–”

“Shut up, Dawn. And don’t you dare tell Mom. This never happened, okay?” She presses a candy bar into Dawn’s hands. “It never happened.”

Five years later, Dawn learns that, actually, it never did happen.
And she cries for lost moments and candy bar blackmail.

Hi,

just finished pm'ing about Amy not knowing Rory EVER existed for nearly three whole eps of Who S5, and how it makes me choke up... and then I bloody well read this, don't I!

You do realise I've no tissues around, don't you?

Oh, and this is tragic; beautiful, and totally, totally believable as a real/false memory so, even though I was almost tempted to hope St. Kilda win; I'm still going to send some positive thoughts out there for the 'pies :-)

Still under Willow & Tara's spell,
Ray.

Thanks!

(Rory and Amy! You must post more stuff on this so I can discuss it with you! *looks pleadingly*)

Hi,

I had this fantasy this morning about the Doctor taking Rory and Amy to see Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef for their honeymoon; after they solve whatever crisis was taxing Her Majesty the Bloody Queen... Mate!

:-)

Still under Willow & Tara's spell,
Ray.

Ahhhhhh saddd. Sad! Oh, Dawn, you break my heart. :((

But fyi, at least in my opinion, an American kid would say mad, not cross, and motorcycle, not motorbike. :)

Motorcycle? Really? *must think this through*

(I was going with "cross" because I was trying to make Dawn sound quite young. Would little kids still go for "mad"?)

Yeah, I've heard motorbike like...never, haha. I've heard of bikes, motorcycles, and various renditions of the two, but never motorbike....

And at least in my experience, a little kid would be even more likely to say mad. In America one uses cross to say things like 'cross your heart', or to say they're mad if they're...pretending to be a spoiled British child? It's really not a very American word, the only example I can think of comes out in a whiny British accent.

These things are important, lol! We'll Americanize you yet! (See how I used a 'z' instead of an 's' for that? Yeahhh.)
