Can I Say “Dawg”?
Vocabulary: words available for expression of thoughts. It’s important to cultivate an extensive vocabulary, ensuring ease of communication across subcultures.
She can discuss eigenstates and simultaneity with the best of them, and her Pylean is reasonable. Her Street Lingo isn’t quite up to scratch yet.
Calling the three of them “all my homies” was met with laughter, and she’s been flatly forbidden from greeting anyone with “hey, bro, how’s it hanging?”
Still, if at first you don’t succeed…
“These tacos are phat, yo.”
Gunn is horrified.
“No! Just… that’s… no. Really, NO.”
Connor looks confused.
“They’re not that big, Fred.”
Ruination
Objects, of course, aren’t nearly as important as people.
When there is destruction, everyone remembers the people. Other things are considered important only if people are in close proximity.
Once abandoned, objects are forgotten. Dismissed. They will rust – or rot – and never be thought of.
And yet the morning sun still touches them.
A car wreck, in a forest.
A window pane, cracked across.
Books with words ripped from them.
A robot, lying in pieces on a highway.
Prison bars, extremely bent.
A white top, stained permanently red.
So much destroyed, and yet no-one cares. Or even remembers.
Not today.
Pet Store
The phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Tara! Do you have Fermetum's Grimoire in your dorm?"
It was Willow. Tara blushed, and was very glad Willow couldn't see.
"Um... I'll check. Why do you need it?"
"I accidentally ate four of Buffy's muffins, and there's only one left."
"And..."
"And I didn't want her to come back and be all 'Hey! One muffin!' so I tried a multiplication spell, but it went kinda freaky, and I forgot to check the whole room first."
"Hmm. Well, I'm sorry, but I can't see it anywhere."
"Well... do you know anyone who wants twenty pet rats?"

Stretching The Truth
Officer Greg Davis had no time for cops who fudged reports. He’d always written everything down, properly detailed.
Until now.
“Incident: Extensive Property Damage, Escaped Prisoners” was giving him some trouble.
1- Destroyed Wall – bricks exploded out by themselves
2- Smashed Windshields – officers thrown into windshields by Suspect One
3- Stolen Patrol Car – stolen by prisoners
4- Escaped Prisoners – got out because of bent cell bars (bent by Suspect Two), and left while we were dealing with Suspect One, who had started flying…
Yeah, right.
Greg picked up his pen, and under “Cause Of Incident”, slowly wrote one word:
Earthquake.

Misquoted
“Got it!”
They dropped what they were doing, and hurried over to the desk.
“You mean you’ve worked out the correct translation? Finally?”
“I have.” Wesley was triumphant. “It’s not Egyptian, it’s Etruscan! Mistaken for Egyptian by the design pattern, but any fool can see it predates their-”
“Great. So, what’s the paragraph about? The struggle between right and wrong?”
“It’s not about right. And it’s not about wrong.”
“Well, what is it about?”
“It’s about power.”
“Well, I’m sort of impressed!”
“It’s a noun, too…”
Angel whispered to Cordelia. “Can you believe the Watcher’s Council let this guy go?”
[A/N - Misquoted was written for the prompt phrase "I did not say that". Being slightly insane, I decided to write an Angel drabble, and fill it with Buffy quotes. Kudos and cookies if you manage to identify them all...]
Not Really Here
“Mark has the cutest smile. He told me that tomorrow he-”
I didn’t write that.
“-and Mom said she could go, because slaying was more important, and I said that she was probably just using-”
I didn’t say that.
“I finally got the CD! Went out yesterday and-”
I didn’t buy that.
“-and it came right over to us. Dad said we shouldn’t feed it, but I-”
I didn’t do that.
Dawn rips the book apart, and chokes back a sob. Then she runs, and leaves the fake room full of fake childhood behind her.
And the pages slowly burn.

Date: 2008-02-20 12:15 am (UTC)Ruination painted one hell of a picture. The only object I couldn't place was the car wreck in the forest, did Warren crash his car there before Willow got him?

Date: 2008-02-20 12:32 am (UTC)Xander, if you remember, ended up stranded in the forest, while Willow flew to the prison, Anya teleported, and Buffy ran...
Glad you liked these!

Date: 2009-05-07 12:45 am (UTC)The Fred one was adorable. And I've been in that situation in one way or another SO many times. XD
The objects one was interesting and poignant, and very you, if that makes sense. Since there's no peopleish characters.
The Willow/Tara one was rather cute/sad. I'm a fan of Willow magic blow-up foreshadowing fics.
The cops one reminds me of that one where the cop keeps ignoring Buffy's sword and decapitated head. (Am I imagining that?)
Misquoted was fun - and I love how you used Buffy quotes for it. I caught a few, but certainly not all.
And the Dawn one was so very Dawn.

Definitely not. The one with the two cops was actually based (slightly) on this drabble...
