A fun morning

There are few things in this world more wonderful than watching an almost-two year old eating a strawberry.
I babysat Alex this morning. We watched Bob The Builder, played the piano (having a keyboard is AWESOME), looked for Elf, found Elf, tried to pat Elf, accidentally scared Elf away, ate some strawberries, looked for Elf again, successfully found and patted Elf, built block towers, knocked the towers down and cheered, looked in the mirror, and read stories.
Quite a few stories, but particularly his current favourite: I Wish That I Had Duck Feet. We read IWTIHDF eight times in two hours. This being despite my best efforts to distract him with other books, more Bob episodes, or my cat.
No, he just wanted "Wish! Two Horns! Duck Feet!" yet again...
I know that in a few years I won't be able to believe how good he was at talking, so I'm recording it here for posterity.
This morning, my nephew, who is 11 days off his 2nd birthday, said the following:
"Mummy's at work. We're waiting for her here."
"Elf. He eats bikkies. Elf is Max's friend. Where is Elf now?"
"Can we play some more piano? I will press more buttons."
"Mummy, kiss it better! I hurt my finger, Mummy. Kiss it better!"
"Sorry for kicking your piano."
"I ate nice strawberries."
"Bob The Builder isn't on anymore."
"The heater. Hot air heating the house."
He also corrected himself. I said "this is my bed", and he repeated "This my be- Auntie Maz's bed."
He can correctly identify a tiny black-and-white plastic bear as a "panda", without being told.
And, when I was getting unbelievably sick of the Duck Feet book, he picked it up, and read it to me. Not word-for-word, obviously. But we looked at the first page, and he said "Puddles! Duck feet!" and when we got to the horns he said "Two horns!" and when we reached the part where Big Bill Brown ties the boy up with his long tail he said "Tied up in a tree!"
He's exhausting to have around, but I kinda wish he never ever left my house. He's so completely lovely!

Date: 2008-05-03 08:12 pm (UTC)I was very careful about buying books for my house's toy box, because I knew I would have to read them a few million times, and I wanted books I could enjoy. The Duck Feet book was my first choice, followed by Hairy Maclary (which you probably haven't read, because it's from New Zealand, but you really should track it down).
