Much Stargateyness
Aug. 23rd, 2008 10:22 amIs it just me, or did Stargate suddenly get hardcore and awesome?
I've watched quite a few episodes lately, including:
Message in a Bottle
(Glowy blue diseases shoot arrows out of a big ball, and Jack spends most of the episode pinned to a wall - never getting anything to stand on despite numerous people suggesting it.)
Family
(Teal'c's wife has married again - clearly her husband must turn evil and die, thus restoring the happy family dynamic. Much to my disappointment, as I prefer Teal'c sans family. Also, electroshock therapy doesn't work like that.)
Secrets
(Daniel's turn for angst, and a reporter gets hit by a car. Also, Sam's dad is horrified to find that she's not going to take advantage of nepotism.)
Bane
(Huge bugs! And really cool girl with a waterpistol.)
Spirits
(The Native Americans episode that seems to be compulsory for all American tv shows. Jack spends most of the episode trying to convince people not to make him disappear.)
The Tok'ra
(Freedom fighters in crystal caves, and Sam's father is dying...)
Touchstone
(A weather-controlly stone that apparently has the ability to spontaneously generate birds - within two minutes of the planet-destroying snowstorm stopping, there are birds flying overhead, even though they all would have been wiped out. Plus, nasty smug soldier guy makes another appearance.)
A Matter of Time
(Abeseiling across the Gate-room, and Sam demonstrating complex physics by using donuts to represent the Stargate. It doesn't get any better than this...)
The Fifth Race
(...that is, until the next episode, in which Jack loses the ability to speak English and still manages to be snarky on paper.)
Serpent's Song
(Evil Goa'uld dies, and we all rejoice!)
Holiday
(Obligatory Sci-Fi Episode number 54: the bodyswap. In this case, a four-way bodyswap, followed by a game of musical chairs. And Daniel eating sundaes and propositioning waitresses.)
One False Step
(A planet of mimes who sing and make flowers grow.)
Show and Tell
(Invisible green insects invade the base and shoot at everyone. Every extra is shot at and killed instantly, while all the regular cast members avoid multiple attacks. Sam's dad isn't in the main cast, and gets hit in the shoulder - but he has a name, so he survives.)
1969
(Hippies! And young General Hammond! And Teal'c with fake hair! And Daniel accidentally confessing to being a Soviet spy! And Jack pretending to be from Star Trek! And hippies! Woo!)
Out of Mind
(A flashback episode, and a cliffhanger. I was very disappointed.)
Hanging out for season three...

Date: 2008-08-23 05:51 am (UTC)As I've said, I enjoyed Stargate most in the early seasons when it was serious, but if you enjoy the other sort of thing (and I do like that too) it's right up there with Buffy. Or close, at least.

Date: 2008-08-23 06:46 am (UTC)I enjoy serious sci-fi (BSG being one example), but only if I can actually take it seriously. In the case of Stargate, the whole thing is so completely ludicrous, in so many ways, that taking it seriously really isn't much of an option. And now that they're having fun abseiling sideways and battling giant bees, I'm actually starting to get into it...
