...well, technically since 1999, since I absolutely believe that The Curse Of Fatal Death should be considered Doctor Who canon.

But honestly! First the man does his level best to give me an irrational fear of gas-masks, and of little boys searching for family members, then he starts giving me nightmares about ticking clocks, the next year it's statues, and now, now he's decided to make me (and the rest of the Who-watching world) afraid of the dark!

Is the man a complete sadist?
And why do I keep watching this show right before I go to bed?

Why do you watch it before you go to bed?
Because you *like* to go to bed scared..subconsciously, your brain wants something to ponder on.
That, and you're watching it when it's showing on telly, not at a random time once you've taped it...

How awesome was it, eh? I knew she wasn't dead! And the books were the forests where the vashta nerada came from! Eeh!
So nice to have a happy ending. For everyone, for once!
The whole time-travel thing confused me as per usual, so I'll just accept it and move on.
Oh, the one thing that reeeally bugged me- they all had the exact same skulls?? Seriously, that was weird. Not a more slender graceful one for the girls? That made it more bad-horror-movieish as opposed to realistically frightening I thought.

But yes, "Muuuuumyyyyy" rates as one of the creepiest things ever...
Ticking clocks?...not so scary I thought.
But the 'Blink' stone angels...ooh, they were so cool. I think, personally, they would have been more frightening *without* the fangs and claws at the end. Just the silent moving-without-you-seeing-them, and hiding their faces, had the creepy factor perfectly.

Bring on the next one!

Wasn't it an incredible episode?

But yes, "Muuuuumyyyyy" rates as one of the creepiest things ever...

Oh yeah. Definitely. And the bit where the typewriter's going by itself...

Ticking clocks?...not so scary I thought.

See, that one I mainly found scary because I watched it at night, by myself. And then went to bed. In a room with a ticking clock.

But the 'Blink' stone angels...ooh, they were so cool. I think, personally, they would have been more frightening *without* the fangs and claws at the end. Just the silent moving-without-you-seeing-them, and hiding their faces, had the creepy factor perfectly.

I agree with you - it would have been much scarier without the fangs. There's nothing worse than people who kill you while looking serenely unconcerned (hence one of the main reasons the Gentlemen are so frightening).

"And the bit where the typewriter's going by itself..."
I don't remember that bit..shall have to rewatch all my old eps, once I get them back from a workmate who's borrowing them- and who doesn't think much of CE as DW, btw. She hopes DT will be more like what she imagines The Doctor to be...

"See, that one I mainly found scary because I watched it at night, by myself. And then went to bed. In a room with a ticking clock."
Are you sure it was a clock...?

"There's nothing worse than people who kill you while looking serenely unconcerned (hence one of the main reasons the Gentlemen are so frightening)."
Oh, are they those silent grinning ones that tent their fingers? Oh gawd. I remember once my friend, huge Buffy fan, came over for a Buffy-evening. Which did I want her to bring along? "Ooh", says I, "that one where they all can't talk!"
She frowns..."you sure?"
Yep, I am.
So, it starts....and as soon as I catch sight of them, I'm begging for her to turn it off and get another episode out. *Any* episode.
Yes, I forgot they were in that one. I can't watch them. They creep me totally. As did the Kindertod. brr.
And as I'm now writing this as I sit alone at home at night, I'm getting paranoid. Dah.
Must go to bed, pull covers over head...I can't see you, you can't see me...

Exactly my problem.

Yes, I forgot they were in that one. I can't watch them. They creep me totally. As did the Kindertod.

They are freaky, aren't they?
Pity if it means you can't watch Hush, though - that episode is brilliant.

mmm...some things, no brilliant rest-of-episode will make me sit through.
Guess it shows how good their writing/ acting is...

(What's the 1999 and Dr Who canon comment about?)

I've been waiting anxiously for your weekly Dr post!

While the rest of the world are in an archaeologist-lady-from-future position here, I figure we Aussies can discuss this as though we don't know what's coming later (even though I kind of know some of it).

**Did you know that Moffat has taken over Dr Who as of the end of Season 4? (I remember little boys and gas masks, but clocks and statues - remind me?)

**What do you think of Professor What's-her-name?

**Do you think the Dr falls in love with her?

(Surely they'd wait to wind up Rose first, rather than continuing that arc alongside this introduction. Or maybe that's the point - to overlap them and keep you interested once Rose finishes.

I think she'll have to appear in Season 5, because they're committed to her appearing alongside David Tennant, and he won't be around much longer. So maybe she'll be Season 5 girlie.

Maybe Moffat is getting in early for his first season in charge!)

**What circumstances do you think would get the Dr to tell someone his name?

**How ON EARTH do you come up with a name that the WORLD will think is supremely Who-ish?

And, MOST importantly,

**DO YOU THINK DONNA WILL EVER FIND HER HUSBAND????????

(I ... think she will.

Only because this show doesn't tend to go in for unresolved tragedies in the long term. They like to pretend at unresolved tragedy... but then they always want to come back and wrap things up nicely for that character after all.

There's a thought... do you think this Rose arc has anything to do with what's-his-name-that-Moffat-is-taking-over-from winding up his involvement with Dr WHo and wanting to leave things all nicely sorted out?)

I did indeed. And I'm extremely thrilled.

What do you think of Professor What's-her-name? Do you think the Dr falls in love with her? What circumstances do you think would get the Dr to tell someone his name? How ON EARTH do you come up with a name that the WORLD will think is supremely Who-ish?

River Song (is that seriously her name?) was kinda cool. And tragic, and so forth.
I absolutely think the Doctor falls in love with her, simply because that is the ONLY circumstance under which I can see him telling someone his name. (And he'd have to love them a LOT.)
As far as us finding out his name... I really don't think we will.

DO YOU THINK DONNA WILL EVER FIND HER HUSBAND????????

I'm going to disagree with you on this one - no, I don't. And no, I won't give you specific reasons at this time...

I remember little boys and gas masks, but clocks and statues - remind me?

Clocks are because of the clockwork guys after Madame de Pompadour - remember, they broke the clocks so that there would only be one thing in the room ticking.
And the statues are from Blink - which, if you haven't seen, you must. NOW!

What's the 1999 and Dr Who canon comment about?

Heck. You haven't seen The Curse Of Fatal Death? You're missing out.

It was done as part of a charity telethon on the BBC, back in 1999. Rowan Atkinson was the Doctor - who, over the course of the episode, died and regenerated into:
-Richard E Grant
-Jim Broadbent
-Hugh Grant
and finally
-Joanna Lumley.

The episode also featured The Master and the Daleks (in an alliance against the Doctor), and a few endless corridor scenes (old!Who style).

...and it was written by Steven Moffat. His first piece of Who-verse writing.

It can scare you without being canon, you know.

It's non-canon to me but it still gives me the awesomes.

Well, TCOFD didn't actually scare me...
But it should SO be canon. (Come on! Joanna Lumley as the Doctor? The Master slowly becoming a Dalek? The endless corridor scene? How could it not be canon?)
