Champagne and Cards

I went to two engagement parties this weekend.

One was composed of people from uni, and included lots of lightsaber references and geeky quotes. The other was people I'm vaguely related to, and included some speeches with champagne and lots of little kids running around.
Both were extremely fun.

The first party also gave me the chance to play 500 for the first time in three years. I've missed that game so much! It got me through some tough years of uni...

How does one get to be 'vaguely related to' someone...is it when it's an in-law's sibling, or cousin, or something?

You missed 500? Ye gods, I never understood it. I think I was the worst player in the history of the world. Sadly, everyone at college I hung out with looooved it, so I usually ended up teaming up with someone so I could at least pretend I was part of a group and having fun...
I could never follow what suit was doing what, and then when they do that thing with jokers that switch suits or whatever...blah.

Give me a nice game of Rommé anyday! :-) Or, Rammi is even better (no idea what you'd call these in English, sorry)- the harder version of Rommé that I refused to play as a kid, but that is now the only one I play as it's so much more fun when you're grown-up and can vaguely count and keep track of several games at once...hard to find info as an explanation, this might work- http://www.r-go.ca/card_game.htm

Oh, my bro just called from Norway to say he's engaged. Yay, here's hoping #2 is a keeper....

"Vaguely related?" My sister's husband's brother. So yes, in-law's sibling.
At the first party, I mentioned that the second party was for "my sister's brother-in-law", and someone pointed out that my husband probably wouldn't be getting engaged...

500 is one of about three card games that I'm actually any good at playing! I completely suck at poker, am average at most stuff, but I kick arse at 500!
The card game you linked to sounds fun, but kinda complicated...

Mm, correct titles for people is fun...like the wiki entry for 'cousin' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin - I keep forgetting what all the 'removeds' are...
I love their 'double cousin' explanation...getting dizzy just trying to make sense of it.
I find people tend to get confused when I talk about my brother-in-law, i.e. my sister's husband. Surely that's the same correct usage of the term as it is for my husband's brother? After all, I'm his sister-in-law...

I kinda get poker, but prefer to play for m&ms...otherwise there's no incentive for me to win! ;-)
Oh, Rammi is such fun. You should play it with us if/ when you come over...my parents and I used to play it allll the time.

I was under the impression that playing 500 *prevented* you getting through some tough years of uni...

Ah see, it depends how good you are at it i guess...
If you are very good you can play it and the work just falls out of the kitty somehow... :)
