The world is slowly getting into Christmas mode...

The Salvos have mini brass bands at every train station.

My decorations are up: big Christmas tree, and bits of tinsel that I keep accidentally pulling down from the ceiling.

There are mince pies being sold in every supermarket, and "Carols by Candlelight" posters on every street corner. (Do people overseas have Carols by Candlelight? Or is it just us?)

Work is getting more silly and excitable by the day.

Every dvd in JB HiFi has just dropped in price by $30. So tempting...

My church had a kids carols service on Saturday (with silly songs and mini dramas, but no puppets, weirdly).

And it's getting hotter. On Friday, I left for work at 6:45am, wearing jeans and a tshirt. First time I've been completely coatless in months.

I love December.

woah, woah, woah! What's the typical price of a DVD? ... what's the exchange for AUS dollars to US dollars?

US dollars are worth slightly more than Aussie dollars - not sure exactly.

Actually, the movie dvds probably haven't dropped that much. Just all the tv show ones. There are now HUGE numbers of tv seasons being sold for about $30 total. Plus the entirety of Buffy (all seasons) being sold for $180.

Farscape is under $30. :-)
And Stargates down to about $50, even the latest ones...I hinted, but seemed to get no response from hubby I was shopping with... *sigh*

Hi

It's funny, as I was reading this post I was thinking yes, that's me in England ... yes ... yes ...

Then you wrote it's getting hotter - I am wearing 3 jumpers!!!!

We have Carols by Candlelight in England.

I've had one winter Christmas (Germany, a while ago), but the idea of Christmas being cold still really freaks me out...

Christmas day should include games of backyard cricket, dammit!

2 years ago - I had the bestest Christmas Day - a snowball fight with my youngest brother ... and we are both in our 40s (We don't often get snow as we live in the South West)

Snowball fights are fun!

When I went to Europe (on an exchange program, so I flew in with 30 other Australians, all of us in our late teens), we landed in Vienna just after a big snowfall.

All 30 of us were running round a park, having a massive snowball fight, and we suddenly looked around and saw these tiny kids, about 7 years old, looking at us as if we were nuts. They all had the same expression: a very clear "What on earth are they doing?"

We felt very silly - but then went straight back to chucking snowballs everywhere...

Meanwhile, I'm: telling buskers that I'll only give them money if they play something that isn't a Christmas carol; having bad dreams about working at Kmart during the busy season and hating how horrible parking is and how busy shopping centres are because we're all a bunch of consumer whores :-p

Also, the weather isn't nice enough for cycling now that I feel able :(

Woo for December!

What's Carols by Candlelight? (Which I suppose says that at least one overseas person hasn't heard of them.)

Oh, wacky Australia. With its upside-down seasons. *giggles* I kind of feel bad for you sorts, seeing as like every part of Christmas stuff is full of snow/reindeer/sleigh references.

And I may not be Christian, but dammit if I don't get my present-buying holiday, too! :P

Present-buying holidays FTW!

Carols by Candlelight? Exactly what it says on the tin.
Basically, you'll have a community carols event (usually outdoors in a big park), and everyone will sit on picnic rugs, people on stage will lead carols, and everyone will sing. Plus there are performancey items, and Santa. Also, it's usually done in the early evening, so everyone lights candles and waves them.

Summer Christmas is fun!
You're right, though, it is kinda confusing, what with all the snowy Christmas cards...

We do, however, have our own Jingle Bells.

oh I do so love Christmas.
We can handle a lot of fleeting snow references in carols, despite the hot weather. But what really gets my goat is when they insist on singing 'Winter Wonderland' at Carols by Candlelight. The stupid song doesn't even mention Christmas, for crying out loud! It has nothing at all to do with Australian Christmas!!!
